Deliver a Product-Specific Configuration File After Purchase

Prepare a configuration file for the exact purchased product and software version, remove credentials, and include an import guide. Test the actual file type or package before offering it through Shopify delivery.

Keep configuration separate from secrets

A configuration package should contain only the values the customer needs for the purchased setup. Do not embed passwords, access tokens, private connection strings, or another customer's identifiers. If the real workflow needs credentials, have the customer enter them through the product's approved settings or secret-management mechanism.

Also separate configuration from executable code. A buyer expecting a settings file should not receive an unexplained script or installer. Confirm the supported import method with the product's own documentation and make any required software version explicit.

An intentionally harmless example

Demo order 5155 is for a fictional display-layout preset. This JSON illustrates safe packaging information; it is not claimed to be importable by a real device or application.

{
  "schema": "demo-layout-1",
  "layout": "two-columns",
  "label_size": "large",
  "theme": "light",
  "revision": "v02"
}

The companion README would say “Demonstration only,” identify the order, explain each setting, and state that no credentials belong in the file. For a real product, replace the invented schema with the actual supported format and validate it using that product's tools.

Check before release

  1. Match the product model and supported software version.
  2. Review every field for credentials, private identifiers, and unnecessary data.
  3. Validate the file using the relevant product's supported procedure.
  4. Test the import with a harmless configuration in an appropriate environment.
  5. Document how the customer can restore their previous settings.
  6. Confirm delivery acceptance for the extension or tested archive.

Record the actual test environment and result. Do not describe a file as “tested” because it passed an upload check; upload acceptance says nothing about the receiving product's behavior.

Deliver with enough context

Use the QuickAttach workflow to associate the prepared file or link with the correct order item. Include the configuration revision and compatible product version in the message. Consult support for upload restrictions rather than renaming an extension to bypass them.

If the buyer reports an import failure, ask for the product version and non-sensitive error text. Do not ask them to send credentials or a complete private configuration merely to identify a delivery issue.

Deliver the right file with the right order
