Test Mixed Orders Before Enabling Digital Fulfillment

Test digital fulfillment on synthetic orders before using it with physical products. Record the before-and-after states of the digital item, physical item, customer message, and connected shipping workflow.

Write expectations before running the test

A test only helps if you know what should happen. Define whether a digital send is meant to affect fulfillment, which item it should affect, and which physical states must remain unchanged. Include any warehouse or shipping integration that reacts to Shopify events.

QuickAttach documents optional fulfillment alongside delivery. The exact interaction with your store's products and integrations must be verified in that store. This article provides a proposed regression plan; no scenarios have been executed or passed here.

Five-scenario matrix

ScenarioActionInspect
Digital onlySend a checked demonstration fileFile access, message, intended fulfillment state
Physical plus digitalSend digital output before dispatchPhysical item and shipping queue remain appropriate
Partial digital readinessSend only the ready itemUnready item is not presented as delivered
Physical dispatch firstDeliver the custom file laterParcel record remains accurate and messages are distinct
Cancellation or holdAttempt the intended staff workflow after a holdStaff recognizes the hold and avoids unauthorized delivery

The cancellation case tests your operating procedure, not a claimed automatic app block. Document what staff must check manually if the application does not enforce the desired rule.

A synthetic test fixture

Use demo customer “Training Buyer,” a harmless PDF labeled “DEMO,” and fictional order references beginning with TEST. Include two distinguishable digital assets so an accidental partial-send mix-up is visible. Do not use a real customer email, private file, or production shipment to make the test realistic.

Capture enough evidence to diagnose failures

Record only sanitized screenshots and notes. If a scenario fails, keep the evidence and pause that workflow until the cause is understood. Re-run affected scenarios after a configuration change rather than declaring success from one unrelated send.

Use the walkthrough to identify the delivery stages and support for questions about unexpected behavior. Assign a release owner who can decide whether the tested results meet your store's requirements.
