Make every download identifiable
Several links labeled “Download” can be hard to distinguish outside their visual layout. Give each available action enough context to identify the deliverable. If the interface supplies labels automatically, inspect whether the underlying item names produce useful labels and report limitations that cannot be changed.
W3C’s Easy Checks cover basic issues such as headings, contrast, keyboard focus, and zoom. They explicitly are not an exhaustive accessibility evaluation. Use the review below to find concrete problems, not to declare the page certified.
A download-page review matrix
| Area | Check | Useful observation |
|---|---|---|
| Labels | Can each action be understood distinctly? | File or item name is meaningful |
| Keyboard | Can the action be reached and used without a pointer? | Focus remains visible |
| States | Are ready and pending explained in words? | Meaning does not depend only on color |
| Zoom | Can enlarged content still be read and used? | No essential action is obscured |
| Structure | Does reading order follow the task? | Item context precedes its action |
Fictional example: two similar reports
Order 4510 contains a room layout and a lighting layout. A test page presents both with the same short label. The merchant checks whether supported item naming or block settings can make the distinction clearer. Where the app controls the label, the merchant reports the exact ambiguity instead of inventing a customization capability.
The test also includes one pending item. A colored dot alone is insufficient for the intended explanation; the reviewer looks for text that tells the customer why no download is ready yet.
Test the actual configured surface
Shopify app blocks are added to supported pages through the editor. The QuickAttach walkthrough describes an order-status download path. Review that path from a customer context rather than assuming the admin preview demonstrates accessible behavior.
- Create a synthetic order with distinct harmless files.
- Review keyboard use, reading order, zoom, labels, and states.
- Record the device, browser, and assistive technology used.
- Separate issues you can fix through supported settings from issues requiring app support.
- Retest the changed behavior.
This protocol has not been executed for your store. Finally, open the files themselves: an accessible retrieval page does not establish that a PDF, spreadsheet, or image is usable by every customer.
