Classify the assets first
A product can represent a service while its attached file is only a sample, welcome guide, or reusable workbook. Do not remove a useful shared asset just because the final work needs order-specific delivery. Conversely, a personalized file accidentally attached to a product needs immediate investigation before migration continues.
Shopify Digital Products documents product-associated assets. Changing that asset should be treated as a catalog decision, not assumed to affect only one buyer.
A mapping checklist
- Identify every asset currently attached to the product or variant.
- Label it reusable, sample, personalized, or uncertain.
- Identify the historical orders that need individual deliverables.
- Match each approved final to its order and purchased item.
- Record existing customer links and any promised availability.
- Test the future purchase path before changing the live catalog.
Do not infer a historical association solely from the current product attachment. It may have changed since the purchase. Use the production and delivery records to establish which version was intended.
A fictional hybrid catalog
A store sells “Website Review.” Every buyer receives a generic preparation guide, followed by a unique audit PDF. For DEMO-483, the guide remains reusable. The final audit becomes an order-specific deliverable. The product description explains both stages so the initial guide is not mistaken for the completed service.
The merchant tests another purchase for the same product and confirms that its audit differs. This is a proposed acceptance test, not a claim about a completed migration.
Choose the cutover boundary
| Order group | Suggested treatment |
|---|---|
| New purchases after cutover | Use the verified new personalized workflow. |
| Unfinished historical work | Map and deliver when the final is approved. |
| Already delivered orders | Preserve existing access until replacement is verified. |
| Uncertain file match | Hold for reconciliation. |
QuickAttach supports order-item files and links. That supports a destination for individual work but does not establish automatic migration or a way to import old access tokens.
After cutover, ask support to handle a synthetic request for an older file. If they cannot identify which delivery route applies, improve the migration register before expanding the batch. The goal is a clear catalog and clear historical purchase records, not merely fewer apps.
