Keep Old Customer Download Links Working During a Migration

Keep the old provider available until you understand what supports its existing links. Uploading the same file elsewhere does not transfer old URLs, tokens, or customer permissions.

Inventory the promises behind each link

An old delivery email may remain the customer’s only reference months after purchase. Before uninstalling an app or closing a hosting account, identify which customers still have a valid access promise and what infrastructure their links depend on.

Store private URLs only in approved systems. A migration checklist can use internal link references instead of copying live tokens into a shared planning document. Separate a provider’s maximum retention from your store’s actual promise.

A fictional overlap period

A shop moves new orders to a new app in October. September buyers have existing links that still work. The shop retains the old service while reviewing those access promises and moves historical orders in a controlled batch. It does not send everyone a new email simply because a migration started.

For DEMO-485, a buyer requests the file during the transition. Support uses the register to find the original route, checks it, and only offers a replacement if needed and authorized. That avoids confusing the buyer with two unexplained destinations.

Verify before retiring a route

  1. Check the old provider’s current uninstall, deletion, and retention behavior.
  2. Confirm the approved original remains recoverable.
  3. Test the new customer route with the intended identity.
  4. Decide whether a replacement notice is necessary.
  5. Record which route support should use from the retirement date.

QuickAttach documents retained order attachments, but that does not imply imported tokens or automatic redirects from another vendor. Do not promise old links will continue to work after cancellation without evidence from that provider.

If uninterrupted access cannot be preserved, communicate a concrete replacement process before the change affects buyers. Explain the new route and any action needed without exposing private documents. Treat link continuity as a customer-service responsibility, not merely a file-copy task.
