Deliver Files for Different Product Variants in the Same Shopify Order

Use the purchased variant as part of the file-selection check. A correct customer and order number are insufficient if the PDF has the wrong dimensions, format, or option for that line item.

Read the variant from the current order

Product titles often remain the same across variants. A merchant preparing A4 and US Letter documents can therefore choose the right project but the wrong export. Read the variant recorded on the order, not the default selection currently shown on the storefront.

The QuickAttach workflow puts delivery in the context of an order, and the app listing describes per-item file association. The app’s association does not replace checking whether the file itself satisfies the selected variant.

Use the purchased options that matter to the deliverable. Color, orientation, language, or file format may be more relevant than paper size in another store. Do not let a filename stand in for inspection of the exported document.

Check the file at the point of release

  1. Compare the current order’s variant with the production brief.
  2. Open the exported release file in a suitable viewer.
  3. Check the properties or visible content that establish the required option.
  4. Match the exact file to the corresponding item before attaching it.
  5. Review the customer-facing label for clarity when similar items appear together.
  6. After delivery, inspect the synthetic customer experience to confirm both items remain distinguishable.

This last step is especially useful when a message truncates long product names. A label that begins with twenty identical words may hide the only meaningful difference on a phone.

Handle a wrong export before it becomes a wrong delivery

In the fictional example, the merchant notices that the monthly planner was exported at A4 size despite its “letter” filename. They regenerate and review that output before upload. Renaming the file alone would not fix the dimensions. The mismatch belongs in the production check, where it can be corrected before the buyer receives anything.

If a variant changes after preparation, invalidate the previous release decision and review the output again. Preserve a short note explaining which option was checked so that another staff member does not restore the old file because its name looks familiar. This is a manual operating control, not a claim of automatic variant validation.
