Order-specific delivery

How to send a unique PDF to each Shopify customer.

When every buyer needs a different file, the PDF has to be attached to the order after checkout, not sent as a product download that every customer receives.

To send a unique PDF to each Shopify customer, you need an order-specific delivery workflow. The customer places the order, your team prepares the right PDF, and the file is attached to that order before or at fulfillment. The customer receives a branded download email and can re-download from their order-status page.

This is different from a standard digital-download setup, where one file is attached to a product and every buyer gets the same file automatically. If your PDF is personalized, made to order, or customer-specific, a product-level download will send the wrong file to the wrong person.

Why Shopify's default download tools do not fit.

Shopify's native digital download features and most download apps work at the product level. The file belongs to the product variant, and every customer who buys that product receives the same file. That model is efficient for ebooks, templates, patterns, and presets — but it breaks for:

The problem is not the file format. The problem is that the delivery model attaches the file to the product instead of the order.

The order-specific PDF workflow.

  1. Customer places the order. Shopify captures the order number, customer details, and line items. No file is sent yet.
  2. Your team creates or prepares the PDF. This might take minutes or days, depending on the product — a report, a reading, a certificate, a custom proof.
  3. Attach the finished PDF to the order. The file should live on the specific order item it belongs to, especially when the order contains multiple custom products.
  4. Send a branded delivery email. The customer receives a download link from your store identity, not a bare attachment from a personal inbox.
  5. Keep the file available. The customer should be able to re-download from their order-status page without contacting support.

What goes wrong with manual email delivery.

Many stores start by sending unique PDFs as email attachments. At low volume, it works. As orders grow, the cracks appear:

The fix is to move the file back to the order. When the PDF is attached to the Shopify order item, the delivery record stays where fulfillment already happens.

How QuickAttach handles unique PDF delivery.

QuickAttach is being built for this gap. It is designed to let a Shopify merchant attach a unique file or secure external link to each order item, send a branded customer download email when fulfillment is ready, and keep the delivery record connected to the order.

For the broader setup, read how to deliver personalized digital products after purchase on Shopify. For a practical process, see the Shopify custom PDF delivery workflow. If your main concern is quality control, read how to prevent sending the wrong PDF to a Shopify customer. If your orders contain several custom files, read how to handle orders with more than one file.

Example: a store selling personalized reports.

A customer buys a customized energy report. Your team checks the order details, builds the PDF, and needs to deliver it only to that buyer. With a product-level download, every customer who buys the report product would receive the same file. With an order-specific workflow, the finished PDF is attached to that customer's order and sent through a branded email.

The same pattern applies to tarot readings, property title documents, audit reports, commissioned artwork proofs, and any made-to-order PDF. The customer gets the right file. Your team gets a delivery record on the order.
